Roberto Berrocal

Roberto Berrocal began his piano studies in his native Bilbao, in the Basque country of Spain. During a Master Class at the University of Deusto in 1996, he was invited to study at the College of Charleston by Uruguayan pianist Enrique Graf. During that time, he received First Prize in many piano competitions and made his debut as a soloist with orchestra at age 18, performing the Liszt Piano Concerto No. 2 with the Metropolitan Community Orchestra.

He graduated from the College of Charleston in 2000 having received the Award for Excellence in Piano and Outstanding Student Award. Before entering the New England Conservatory of Music, he traveled to Madrid to study with the renowned pianist Joaquín Soriano and was hired by the Cinema Academy “Quince de Octubre” in Barcelona to compose the soundtrack for the short movie “Nunca es Domingo” (It’s Never Sunday). The short movie won the First Prize in the Crested Butte Cinema Festival in Colorado and in several other festivals in Europe.

Roberto graduated from the New England Conservatory of Music with a Masters Degree in Piano Performance as one of three winners of the Blütner Foundation Piano Competition. He also obtained a Graduate Diploma in Collaborative Piano focusing in opera, studying with the renowned pianist and conductor John Moriarty.

In 2006, Roberto Berrocal joined the Florida Grand Opera Ensemble as a pianist and vocal coach. He was hired for a teaching position at The New World School of the Arts, and became the Music Director for St. Hugh Catholic Church in Coconut Grove in 2007. He returned to Florida Grand Opera as Principal Coach for FGO’s 2012-2013 Season. He has been the pianist for the 25th, 26th, and 27th YPO FGO National Voice Competitions. Mr. Berrocal recently founded the St. Hugh Steinway Concert Series serving as the Artistic Director.
